Well, Hobo’s pretty much the same thing, except it’s a real movie made in a faux-Grindhouse style based on a fake fake trailer made in a legitimately-Grindhouse style that screened in the Canadian cut of a real movie named Grindhouse.
Not really following me? Short version: Rutger Hauer shoots evil in the dick. Several times.
It’s quite literally the best thing.
Looking for a plot? That would be those four words right up there in bold. We’d be happy to break that down for ya into six syllables, if that’s more to your liking. Our titular transient, played to barely comprehensible perfection by Hauer, acquires the perfect tool to mete out pump-action’d justice, and proceeds to put down evil by the dickload.
No joke. Bestest thing.
What sets Hobo apart from, say, Machete—or the recent deluge of everything-bad-is-good-again ironic schlock—is that Hobo is presented without a singular shred of irony. When a busload of schoolchildren is set on fire or a hooker brings herself to orgasm on an arterial spatter, there isn’t even the faintest spasm of a winking oh-aren’t-we-clever-ness. It’s too busy being awesome to be clever. It just pops a proverbial wheelie, flips the audience off and keeps on fucking going.
